Kindersley was named in 1907 in honour of Sir Robert Kindersley, a major stockholder in the Candian Northern Railway . The town has a current population of 4,800 with another 35,000 people within its trading district. The town is the largest urban centre between Saskatoon and and Medicine Hat and acts as a major service center for the surrounding communities. Kindersley started and depended heavily on being a railway town, opening up Western Canada at the turn of the century. Like most towns, economic stability came with the people, their enterprises and the productive land. Today the main industries are farming and oil.

The town of Kindersley has a modern 50-bed hospital and elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools. Unlike most rural communities, 80 per cent of the population is under 55 years old, providing a young work force and a growing community. A local community college and minor sports program help keep a close knit community.

The community has a number of sporting facilities as well including the local Bowl-A-Drome, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and a variety of park areas and Berard Field, a semi pro baseball diamond with a capacity of 5,600 (host of 1984 World Youth Baseball Championship).
